I suck at motion problems.
Natalie and Hope are racing on a track. Natalie runs 4 miles per hour and gets a 0.25 mile head start. Hope runs 0.5 miles per hour faster than Natalie. If Natalie and Hope run the same distance, how many hours, x, do they run?

I need to know how many turns this track has, and how much of a NASCAR fan Hope is.
Hope sounds like a NASCAR fan.

Solve the following IVP

I have no idea, but I like to imagine that this is Hope.

So let x equal the number of hours. Natalie runs 4x+ 0.25, and Hope runs 4.5x. Set these equal to each other and solve for x

MAN I miss Middle School.

That I can do. I hadn’t made the leap to 4.5x.
Thanks.

4X + .25 = 4.5X
Subtract the 4x from both sides
.25 = .5X
Divide both sides by .5
.5 = X
So they ran for half an hour

4x + .25 = 4.5x
I think it’s setting the two rates equal to each other but, I may be entirely wrong.

No problem

That looks right, and somebody else said the same thing. I hadn’t made the leap to 4.5x to account for the faster speed. I’m gonna fail MS math. And I’ll likely take my son down with me.

I can solve it, I just couldn’t set up the equality. Thanks.

Haha. It wasn’t intentional.

This is how I read word problems. “If a train poops in the woods did the chicken cross the road?”

I do. And my son also has an uncle who teaches 7th grade math. But he lives in CA.

The kid was added in post. He wasn’t there in the original video. That’s the only one I could find quickly.

Okay, here’s another one:
Drew and Will each began saving money for a new computer. Drew saves $5 per week plus $50 he receives for his birthday. Will saves $7 per week. Write an inequality to find w , the number of weeks until Will has saved at least the same amount as Drew.
It’s the inequality bit that is throwing me off here. Thanks in advance.

Math is harder.

5w+50=7w (w is the weeks at which they are equal)
Subtract 5w from each side
50=2w
w=25
The amount of money collected at that point by each party was $175.

I got that, but the problem specifically asked for an inequality . Is this the same thing?

There is a catch.
SHOW YOUR WORK.
Haha. I remember those. Although I haven't done it in forever, I could likely do middle school math. My daughter is in Kindergarten and my wife is bad at math. I hope Oppo is around for calculus when the time comes.

Hm.
7w is greater than or equal to 5w+50
w is greater than or equal to 25
I’m doing algebra in school now. So help me god.

I can’t help you ttyymmnn. I was only “slightly” good at geometry. Meaning that geometry was the only math class where the teacher didn’t give me the look of “you’re gonna suck at adult life kid” when I turned in test papers. :P
